Sixteen descendants of the Weidner family attended a reunion on April 2, 2022, at the Doeppenschmidt-Weidner Ranch in Honey Creek State Natural Area. Many were the tales recounted about life on the old ranch. One descendant talked of milking the cow called Stumpfer Schwanz (Stump-Tail) in the milking barn next to the acetylene gas generator. None of the descendants knew anything about the generator, except that they had all been warned not to go near it. Others told of dipping cattle in the concrete plunge dip, butchering hogs and shearing and butchering sheep, and of grandmother beheading chickens on a large log in preparation for dinner. Still others recalled vividly an old cemetery down by Jacob’s grave that no one was able to find. Many dates of buildings and events were provided. These included when the ranch house first became electrified (1940s), when the concrete square cistern on the hill was built (1917), and when the windmill blades came down (mid-1960s). Regarding the latter, the cause of the blades coming down was revealed to be a tornado, spawned probably by Hurricane Carla in 1961. All Photos by Charleen Moore unless otherwise noted.
