Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area have a variety of opportunities for volunteers with diverse interests. Being a State Park positioned so closely to the San Antonio area means we have high numbers of visitors on weekends and holidays. This provides us the opportunity to introduce people who may have little familiarity with the outdoors in its more pristine state to the natural wonders and beauty of the Park and Natural Area. We are also able to introduce visitors to the ideals of land stewardship and the need to protect and maintain our natural resources, including the native flora, fauna, and physical environment.
Below are some of the volunteer opportunities available:
- Bird banding
- Bird blind maintenance (contact Linda Gindler at ljgindler@gmail.com)
- Conducting various research surveys of butterflies, birds, and amphibians
- Educational presentations for children, including school groups, and for adults (contact Thea Platz at tplatz@neisd.net or Holly Camero at eyesthatfly@aol.com)
- Habiscape maintenance and planting/beautifying various garden patches such as at the entrance gate (JFBOGLE@gvtc.com)
- Helping out at events
- Leading guided hikes for the public in the Honey Creek State Natural Area (contact: Nancy Gray at grayabbott@aol.com)
- Photographing events for the Friends (contact Charleen Moore at mackandchuck@gmail.com)
- Publicity for fundraising and other events
- Rust House restoration and maintenance requiring carpentry, painting, landscape management
- Service projects to assist park staff with river cleanups, cedar clearing, Park road cleanup, and other projects
