October 19, 2019, 10 am-2 pm: Monarch and Friends Pollinator Fiesta
The Fiesta, in conjunction with the last days of the BioBlitz, celebrated the migration of the Monarchs with a fun and informative morning and afternoon full of activities, speakers and a photo contest. The amazing Monarch butterfly and our essential pollinators were showcased at the event by some of the leading organizations for family fun and outdoor adventures. Participants learned more about these amazing creatures and how ordinary citizens can help them thrive.
The participating organizations were the Cibolo Nature Center, Comal County Beekeepers, Comal County Master Gardeners, Girl Scout Troop 416, GRSP/HCSNA volunteers, Lindhiemer Native Plant Society, Mammen Family Public Library (Bulverde/Spring Branch), NPS San Antonio Missions, San Antonio Zoo, Texas Children in Nature San Antonio Collaborative, Texas Master Naturalists, and Witte Museum. The venue for the event was along the oak-shaded path behind the Discovery Center.
Two presentations were given at the Amphitheater.
Fred Loxsom, Professor Emeritus at Trinity University and Master Naturalist, is a member and former president of the Native Plant Society in San Antonio,. He presented on “The Lives of Monarch Butterflies.”
Kim Hoskins, Professor at Palo Alto College in exotic veterinary medicine is a Wildlife Biologist and Bat Expert. She presented on “We all know about bees and butterflies but what about those Lesser Known Pollinators?”
