SUMMARY:The Karankawas and Tonkawas: A History of Power and Perseverance
DESCRIPTION:Join the Friends of GRSP/HCSNA at the Mammen Family Public Library for this unique presentation! \nThe Native peoples of Texas have long been misrepresented in popular narratives. In this talk\, Dr. Tim Seiter explores the histories of the Karankawas and the Tonkawas\, debunking common misconceptions and highlighting their resilience in the face of colonial aggression. These Indigenous nations built extensive trade networks\, skillfully utilized native plants\, and maintained control of their territories far longer than is often recognized. The Karankawas\, for instance\, held authority over their homelands for twice as long as the United States has been a nation. Despite facing extermination policies from the Spanish\, early Anglo-Americans\, and the U.S. government\, these Native groups endured. Join us as we uncover the ingenuity\, strength\, and survival of Texas’s first peoples. \nThis presentation is offered in partnership with the Friends of Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area. \nMore about Dr. Timothy Seiter: \nTim Seiter serves as an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Texas at Tyler\, having completed his doctoral dissertation at SMU in May 2024. Seiter studies colonial Texas and recently put the finishing touches on his first book\, Wrangling Pelicans (University of Texas Press)\, which describes life as a presidio soldier in eighteenth-century Spanish Texas. Dr. Seiter is now writing a general history of the Karankawa peoples of the Texas Gulf entitled “Persistent Peoples.” This book highlights the Karankawa people who are reclaiming their land and revitalizing their culture today. \nRegistration for this program is encouraged\, but not required. \nFor more information\, please visit: The Karankawas and Tonkawas: A History of Power and Perseverance | Mammen Family Public Library

San Antonio (and surrounding areas) is the 2024 National Champions–help us keep our title in 202 \nWhat will we be doing? \nDuring this hands-on aquatic field study\, we’ll explore the incredible biodiversity of the park’s water through:\nBenthic Macroinvertebrate Sampling – Investigate the tiny aquatic insects\, snails\, and other invertebrates that indicate water quality.\nIchthyology (Fish Study) – Observe fish species in their natural habitat and learn about their roles in the ecosystem.\nAquatic Vegetation Survey – Identify and document native and invasive plant species that impact freshwater ecosystems. \nAll data collected will be uploaded to iNaturalist and contribute to ongoing conservation research! \nHow to Participate \n-Download the iNaturalist App (free on iOS & Android) and create an account.\n-Join our aquatic field study at Guadalupe River State Park\n-Take photos of any plants\, animals\, fungi\, or other organisms you find.\n-Upload your observations to iNaturalist\, where experts and fellow nature lovers will help identify them! \nDrop-in anytime between 10:00am and 1:00pm! \nWho: Inquiring minds; children must be accompanied by an adult; please no pets\nWhere: River; look for the green canopy and table set up in the day-use area near the bottom of the stairs\nBring: Drinking water\, sun protection\, and water shoes\nCost: Free with park admission; Adults: $7\, Children 12 & under: Free \nIf ADA assistance is required\, please request modifications using this form\, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance. \n**Park programs are subject to change/cancellation in the event of inclement weather**
