DESCRIPTION:Free Fishing Day: Saturday\, June 7\, 2025\nOn the first Saturday in June of each year\, everyone can fish recreationally without licenses or endorsements. This opportunity exists so that more people can try fishing for the first time. If you already have your license\, thank you for your support! Please consider inviting a friend or family member to join you. \nFishing in State Parks\nAnglers can also enjoy free fishing all year at more than 70 state parks (park entry fees still apply). All other fishing regulations\, such as length and bag limits\, remain in effect. A fishing license and endorsement are not required if fishing on state park property or in waters completely enclosed by a state park. On man-made structures (docks\, piers\, jetties\, etc.) within state parks\, fishing is allowed by pole-and-line only\, and each person is limited to two poles. Please check with the park before participating in any fishing activity and to confirm any additional regulations. In this talk\, Dr. Tim Seiter explores the histories of the Karankawas and the Tonkawas\, debunking common misconceptions and highlighting their resilience in the face of colonial aggression. These Indigenous nations built extensive trade networks\, skillfully utilized native plants\, and maintained control of their territories far longer than is often recognized. The Karankawas\, for instance\, held authority over their homelands for twice as long as the United States has been a nation. Despite facing extermination policies from the Spanish\, early Anglo-Americans\, and the U.S. government\, these Native groups endured. Join us as we uncover the ingenuity\, strength\, and survival of Texas’s first peoples. \nThis presentation is offered in partnership with the Friends of Guadalupe River State Park and Honey Creek State Natural Area.  \nMore about Dr. Timothy Seiter: \nTim Seiter serves as an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Texas at Tyler\, having completed his doctoral dissertation at SMU in May 2024. Seiter studies colonial Texas and recently put the finishing touches on his first book\, Wrangling Pelicans (University of Texas Press)\, which describes life as a presidio soldier in eighteenth-century Spanish Texas.
